Post Covid Diet Plan

Some one from our extended family may be victim of Covid 19 & victorious. Nonetheless, recovering patients often say they feel far from being in the pink of health, and for many, the road to recovery is long one.

Among the most common lingering symptoms are shortness of breath, fatigue & sleep disorder. In all 84 different symptoms and clinical signs are reported including loss of taste & smell, cognitive disorder such as loss of memory and difficulty concentrating, depression, anxiety, chest pain fevers.

In the united Kingdom, the national Health Service says that those who have recently recovered from the coronavirus need more energy, proteins, vitamins & minerals to return  to the peak of health. This suggests that one's diet should include foods that boost immunity and help in regaining stamina and energy.

In fact, this is a good time to go back to what Hippocrates, the Greek Physician often called the Father of modern medicine said " Let food be the medicine"

Apart from following safety protocols & monitoring one's health, holistic coaches & nutritionists are also urging everyone to go inward & look at what they consume. They suggest eating food high in antioxidant content which helps maintain oxygen levels in our body.

Wellness consultant Neetha Bhoopalan explains " A diet which enhances oxygen saturation in our body is very helpful for upping the body's defense mechanism against illness & also enhances immunity. It also keeps our cells protected and healthy."

Look at foods rich in iron and nitrates

Chief clinical dietician. Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi who also oversee Covid meal kits at a Bengaluru-based hospital, suggests consuming food rich in iron & nitrates. " Foods that are rich in iron and nitrates are key to increasing oxygen supply throughout your body. So, beetroot, leafy vegetables, pomegranate, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts, meat, nuts & seeds help. But do ensure good hydration since our cellls also needs to breathe & when we drink enough water , our body delivers oxygen to all cells. Food rich in nitrates, iron, folic acid, B12 help the complete assimilation of iron in blood which increases the oxygen carrying capacity. Avoid foods that cause acidity as the use of antacids later on, delay iron absorption,"

Nutrition & well ness consultant, Sheela Krishnaswamy urgesus to look at foods that help to improve hemoglobin levels that in turn improve the oxygen uptake in the body. " Heme iron present in read meat, organ meats helps to improve iron levels in the body. Plant foods contain non-heme iron which is found in dark green leafy vegetables, black currants, dates, beaten rice (poha), pulses. Do  note that for the non -hem iron to be absorbed, Vitamin C is essential . Go for rich sources of vitamin C which are found in Indian gooseberry, guava, fruits, leafy green, lime & the like."

" Beetroots are a great source of fiber, folate (Vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron & vitamin C. Being rich in iron & folate, it develops nitrates in the body which helps in oxygen absorption in the blood." adds health coach & nutritionist Preety Tyagi

Go for a balanced low salt diet.
Not giving in to the latest fad, experts suggests a holistic approach to how we eat with equal importance to hydration and a low on salt diet,

" A low salt diet is also important as not only as it good for the heart and blood pressure, but water retention due to high salt can also cause difficulties in breathing. Low potassium can also cause breathing difficulties, hence  bananas, beetroot juice are beneficial in such cases. Essentially eat a heart-healthy diet, hydrate well, use electrolytes in summer if needed. Manage stress and stay active to ensure your heart, your oxygen levels as well as your lungs stay strong. An overall balanced diet with whole foods and plenty of variety is the best approach" says Yoga & Ayurveda life style specialist Namita Piparaiya.
